SMARTMOBAIR – Smart Mobility in Adriatic Ionian Region Urban Areas

Sector:Sustainability
Typology:International
Programme:INTERREG IPA ADRION 2021-2027
Project duration:01/09/2024 - 31/08/2027

SMARTMOBAIR is an Interreg IPA Adrion initiative aimed at enhancing sustainable and smart urban mobility across the Adriatic-Ionian region.
The project tackles pressing challenges such as traffic congestion and air pollution by implementing intelligent transport systems (ITS), promoting cleaner transport options, and fostering cross-border collaboration among 16 diverse partners.
By aligning with the European Green Deal, SMARTMOBAIR aims to create an efficient and sustainable transport network that benefits residents and protects the environment.

EXPECTED RESULTS

The project’s key outcomes include:

  1. implementation of 6 pilot actions to test and validate innovative mobility solutions
  2. development of transnational guidelines for integrating ITS into Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs)
  3. creation of monitoring tools and indicators to evaluate mobility system improvement
  4. increased stakeholder capacity through training workshops and knowledge-sharing initiatives.

The main beneficiaries will include cities and mobility service providers, as well as provincial and regional authorities, ICT and mobility sector companies, and ultimately the general population.

A multidisciplinary smart mobility network will be established. This network, rooted in the quadruple helix model, will facilitate collaboration among government, industry, academia, and citizens. Its aim is to support innovation, co-creation, and the implementation of ITS solutions tailored to sustainable and smart urban transport.

Smart mobility solutions will be piloted in six Cities: Gorizia, Koper, Nis, Novo Sarajevo, Shkodra, and Rethymno. These pilot projects will focus on cost-effective solutions that improve quality of life, reduce pollution, and cut CO2 emissions and will integrate with local policies and plans (e.g., SUMPs) to address specific regional needs, ensuring alignment with local strategic planning.
