LAAS
The Area Sud Multi-Omics Laboratory (LAAS) was set up thanks to the collaboration between Area Science Park and the Department of Pharmacy of the University of Salerno through the financing to the PRP@CERIC – Pathogen Readiness Platform for CERIC-ERIC Upgrade project, funded with PNRR. The aim is to create a highly specialized research infrastructure, which integrates state-of-the-art sequencing equipment with cutting-edge computational methodologies. The proteomic, lipidomic and metabolomic expertise of Prof. Campiglia’s laboratory, equipped with highly technological instruments, is flanked by Area Science Park devices and know-how for the study of genetic, epigenetic, transcriptomic and epitranscriptomic modifications.
The integration of omics data and longitudinal profiling of any sample aims to understand the molecular basis of biological processes, both in physiological and pathological conditions, thus offering a holistic perspective. LAAS closely works with the Genomics and Epigenomics Laboratory – LAGE at Area Science Park, collaborating on a daily basis in research projects ranging from virology to plant genomics, and personalized medicine studies. This integrated approach allows for the identification of molecular alterations in different biological and clinical context, contributing to the discovery of new prognostic and diagnostic biomarkers, the monitoring of disease states evolution, the patient stratification and the development of innovative strategies to support early diagnosis.
The laboratory is designed to generate a huge amount of data and perform high quality analyses, thanks to automation platforms and development/implementation of integrated analytical strategies based on bioinformatics and data science approaches.
Cutting-edge equipment
The LAAS biobank is a facility dedicated to the storage and management of biological samples, supporting research activities in the omics sciences. The samples—comprising blood, tissues (both animal and plant), and their extracts (DNA and RNA)—are collected, electronically cataloged, and stored under optimal conditions to ensure their integrity and availability for future studies. This resource is fundamental for studies on epigenetic modifications, mutations, and transcriptional and translational variations.
The Tecan Fluent 760 automated platforms are used to manage and automate pre- and post-PCR workflows, optimizing the extraction of biological macromolecules from samples and the preparation of libraries for analysis with omics instrumentation (sequencers, gas and liquid mass spectrometry, electrospray, etc.). This workflow provides high throughput, speed, and precision, reducing the risk of errors and improving the reproducibility of results. It is particularly valuable for high-capacity studies, such as sequencing or gene expression analysis.
The Olink Signature Q100 is an advanced proteomics platform used to analyze dozens of protein biomarkers simultaneously per sample. Utilizing Proximity Extension Assay (PEA) technology, this instrument offers exceptional sensitivity and precision in protein measurement. In genomics and epigenomics laboratories, the Q100 is employed to study the interactions between genetic and epigenetic factors and protein responses, facilitating biomarker discovery for understanding complex diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
